What Is The Difference Between OT And PT?
On the surface, occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy's (PT) roles in patients' recovery seems interchangeable. Therefore, it is difficult to know when or where an OT or PT would be more beneficial to you depending on your needs.
First, let's talk about OT:
OT offers a unique, individualistic, and holistic approach that focuses on the whole person, navigating the complex dynamics of the client, activity, and the environment. OTs focus on improving a client’s ability to perform their meaningful occupations (activities) such as playing sports (golf, tennis, basketball), returning to work, cooking, cleaning home, or putting on clothes). In OT, we work on helping our clients function within their environment to the best of the ability using task analysis, psychosocial, and physical functional approaches. OT has been recommended to manage chronic pain from a non pharmacologic perspective.
A key misconception is that OTs only treat upper extremities and PT treats lower extremities. That is not the case! At Empire City Occupational Therapy PLLC, you will receive holistic, individualized care focusing on your whole body to increase your independence and performance with your everyday function. OT treatments can focus on manual therapy, custom orthosis fabrication, kinesiotaping, strengthening exercises, stretching, physical activities, and modalities to alleviate your complaints and return you to your prior level of function.

Now let's talk about PT:
PT is a healthcare profession that are movement experts who improve quality of life through prescribed exercise, hands-on care, and patient education. PTs focuses on treating a patient’s specific impairment from a biomechanical perspective, and focuses restoring physical function. Ultimately, PT aims to improve mobility, manage pain, and restore function.
How Can OT Help Alleviate My Pain?
Chronic pain is a major public health problem in the United States. Chronic pain causes significant dysfunction for its victims and their families, preventing them from performing their meaningful occupations. Chronic pain can lead to increased dependency on others, loss of worker and family roles, and difficulty participating in everyday activities. Sleep problems, depression, anxiety, social isolation, and overall reduced quality of life are common issues facing people with chronic pain. The pain is often intractable, and resistant to or not relieved by available medical approaches.
An OT can help you manage your pain by. some of the following approaches:

1. Using a self-management approach to participate in meaningful activities through adaptations/modifications.
2. Functional Goal Setting.
3. Proactive pain control training.
4. Safe Body Mechanics and Ergonomics.
5. Neuromuscular Re-education.
6. Muscle Tension Reduction Training.
7. Communication Skills Training.
8. Proactive Problem Solving.
